H.S. Ede was born in India in 1878, the son of a Chief Engineer in the Public Works Department of the Indian Government. He attended Eton College, Cambridge University, and Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating with a B.A., M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., L.R.C.P.(Edin.), F.R.C.P., in 1900, 1902 and 1904 respectively - becoming Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1902 and FRCP in 1904 - before entering general practice at his home town of Woodford Green, Essex in 1905, where he remained until his death in 1960 . He was also Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in London (1902), Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (1941), Honorary Fellow of Trinity College (Cambridge) (1948), Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London) (1949), and an honorary doctorate from Woodford Medical School (1948).
